ARTIST’S STATEMENT
As a child, I loved to draw. I was fortunate to have a mother who encouraged me by enrolling me in art classes when I was quite young. I have studied art ever since. My main interest has been sculpture. I loved to carve in hard wood, work in clay and create works in wax later to be cast in bronze. A secondary fascination was printmaking. I enjoyed experimenting in a variety of techniques
Now that I am an octogenarian, I am limited to less physical art activities. I enjoy investigating new techniques and find new ways to be creative. I am using sewing techniques to create mystical objects. I am also creating three dimensional work with a basket technique using waxed linen woven over wire. It is never too late to try new things.
My earlier work involved the gesture of the human figure. It was exciting to see how a gesture could provoke so much emotion. I was also fascinated by images of mothers with children and used this theme in many of my creations. I have another passion. I love ravens and crows. I am delighted by the way they move and the distinctive way they fly. There is a certain mystique about these birds. It thrills me to see them cavort and entertain themselves. I find them fascinating.
Art has been an extremely important part of my leave. Besides creating artwork, I am exhilarated by creativity in others.
BIOGRAPHY
Jacqueline Marks recently won the First Place Award for her paper clay sculpture Book of Flight, in the Small Treasures Exhibitions at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Marks has won a number of awards for both two and three dimensional work, including an award presented by the American Ceramics Society.
Her semi-abstract figurative work has been shown in juried exhibitions and invitational exhibits at the Los Angeles County Fair, the Torrance Art Center Gallery, Whittier Art Association Gallery, South Bay Jewish Artists Council, Hermosa Beach Civic Auditorium, Palos Verdes Art Center, The Orange County Museum of Art and other venues.
Marks has done commissions for the Edna Reis award, Reiss-Davis Clinic; the Emma Stern Award, Jewish Centers Associates; and a P.V.A.C. Award for the Norris Foundation. Her work is in many private collections.
Of late, Marks’ artwork has focused on the subject of birds, especially crows and ravens. Their ability to survive in a hostile human environment, their playfulness and their appeal as a source of folk tales and their mystical qualities make them appealing to her.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved to create objects. It astonished me that I could take materials such as clay or wood and turn them into sculpture. To start with an idea and some raw materials and transform them into art gave me great satisfaction. It still does!
